Even as a child, it was very evident that Taurus O. Perkins would be an
artist. Throughout his high school years, this gift was nurtured and
allowed him to attend Memphis College of Art. Taurus began his
professional resume in 1987 with a summer internship that led to an
offer of full-time employment as a freelance graphic artist.
Fate intervened in 1989 when Taurus accepted a
position at the Naval Air Training Center as a technical illustrator
and quality control agent in Millington, TN. It was there, Taurus
gained first-hand knowledge of the discipline and motivation that so
clearly defines the United States Marine Corps. So impressed with their
motto – Honor, Courage, and Commitment, a vision began to take shape.
Perkins
was already a bulldog enthusiast dating back from his childhood. He was
fortunate enough to have made the acquaintance of Flora Green, a
renowned breeder of more than a dozen championship English Bulldogs.
His friendship and collaboration with Mrs. Green led to such an
understanding and appreciation of this wonderful breed, that Taurus
eventually came to own one of the offspring of her grand champion
“Booker T”. So, the bulldog depicted in the Sergeant Perkins’
collection holds a very special place in Mr. Perkins’ heart.
Many
are impressed with the authenticity of the dress blue uniform of Sgt.
Perkins. Taurus gratefully acknowledges the technical advice of mentor
and friend, Sergeant Major Anthony R. Hope, USMC. It has only been with
the support of family, friends, and mentors that Taurus has been able
to create a collection that embodies the spirit of the United States
Marine Corps – Honor, Courage, and Commitment.
