About The Artist
Award winning artist and framer Taurus O. Perkins has created a moving and dynamic tribute to the U.S. Marine Corps that salutes the sacred commitment of the mascot Sgt. Perkins, the Corps and their families. Incorporating the tones of the Marine uniform, Perkins honors the Corps official prayer with a dignified, authentically correct original image of the Marine mascot standing at attention, proud and ready to defend the Corps mission.
A graduate of the Memphis College of Art, Perkins' talent and perception were clearly evident by high school, where he had formulated a ready plan for success and the dedication to achieve it. By graduation, he was at work as a commercial artist and has seen steady progress towards his goal as an independent artist and art producer.
"I've never been ashamed of my commercial leanings," Perkins explains. "Even if you concentrate on strictly esoteric work, you have to market and sell it and yourself, so all art is essentially commercial. I know it's not the romantic vision we've always attached to art, but I've always intended for my art to feed me. Plus, I like it when people accept and enjoy my work. Regardless of your aesthetic leanings, art should never be selfish. It takes the beauty out if you can't share it."
After many freelance successes while working as a hub employee at Federal Express, Perkins landed an important job with Dillards as their chief display designer. Already trained in stage design, his gift for proportion and color came into full effect, displaying designer labels like the most famous New York houses. In April, 2000 his framing design to salute Michael Jordan won first place (sports) in an art contest sponsored by Nielsen & Bainbridge, a top framing supply firm. Décor magazine also highlighted this excellent piece (8/2000), coinciding with the "Frame of the Month, (2/2000)" selection he received that same year for another design.
Following a tip from his grandfather, he landed a job at the Naval Air Station as Technical Illustrator and Quality Control Agent, thus beginning the tenure that has led to the creation of the Marine's Prayer Commemorative Poster.
